Sousse

Fewer than 100 miles from the Tunisian capital of Tunis, the town of Sousse is among the oldest in Tunisia. Its busy medina has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Most of the top sites in Sousse are inside its medina. These include a souk and a number of museums, including one devoted to the art of mosaic. Another popular museum is the creatively-named “Traditional Tunisian House”, a real house that has been converted into a museum to showcase, well, traditional Tunisian life. The medina is dominated by the Great Mosque, a peaceful place of refuge and prayer built in 850 AD in the austere Aghlabite style.
The hotels and guesthouses in Sousse are generally clean and well-maintained, although maybe not quite up to the standards found in European hotels with similar star ratings. The easiest way to reach Sousse is to fly to Monastir, a mere 20 minutes away.
